Key facts

  • Similar letter codes do not mean equivalent measurements.
  • Official MBTI uses four preference pairs.
  • 16Personalities uses its own NERIS framework and an A/T Identity scale.
  • MBTIPEDIA’s preference and function exercises are separate reflections.
  • A result should identify its instrument and date.

The quick read

Official MBTI, 16Personalities and MBTIPEDIA are separate tools. NERIS has five trait scales and no Jungian function stack; MBTIPEDIA offers original short reflections without established psychometric validity.

Start by naming the model

The official MBTI assessment belongs to the Myers-Briggs framework. 16Personalities identifies its instrument as NERIS Type Explorer. MBTIPEDIA independently publishes original questionnaires and explanatory articles. We are not affiliated with either publisher.

This distinction matters when results disagree. Before deciding that your personality changed, check which questionnaire you completed, which language you used and how its percentages are defined. A familiar acronym does not make the questions, scales or interpretation interchangeable.

The table compares stated scope, not a ranking of scientific quality. Evidence for one instrument does not transfer to another.

Why the wording and fifth letter matter

16Personalities’ official reference uses Observant for S and Prospecting for P. Its Assertive/Turbulent distinction belongs to its fifth Identity scale. Those suffixes are not extra official MBTI preferences, and MBTIPEDIA does not calculate them.

The NERIS framework page explains its relationship to trait models and its decision not to use Jungian function priorities. Consequently, a NERIS INFJ result should not by itself be treated as a measured Ni–Fe stack. Read a source in the vocabulary it actually uses.

Choose for the question you have

If you want to explore the official Myers-Briggs framework, consult its official assessment information and interpretation resources. If you already have a result ending in -A or -T, read it with the NERIS documentation. If you want a brief exercise with visible scoring rules, start with our preference reflection and methodology.

For a practical disagreement, begin with what happened: information missing, priorities in conflict, or expectations left unstated. A type vocabulary can help organize the conversation, but it cannot replace asking another person what they meant. None of our tools should select employees, diagnose a condition or decide who deserves an opportunity.

When the results do not agree

Keep a simple record: instrument, date, language, scores and the situation in which you answered. Compare the underlying questions before translating one code into another. Read both sides of a close preference and look for examples that contradict the description as well as examples that fit.

Our accuracy guide separates reliability from categorical agreement and personal usefulness. Our function library explains a theoretical vocabulary; it is not a hidden conversion algorithm between competing tests.

Common questions

Is 16Personalities the official MBTI test?

No. It uses its own NERIS framework. The familiar four-letter format does not make it the same instrument.

Can I convert an A/T score into a cognitive function?

No justified conversion is provided here. The Identity scale and Jungian function descriptions belong to different frameworks.

Which tool gives my one true type?

We do not claim a tool can settle an unchanging identity. Start with the purpose and evidence of a specific instrument, then compare the result with your experience.
