The 20-item reflection
The preference questionnaire has five items for each of four pairs: E–I, S–N, T–F, and J–P. Responses run from 1 to 5, from disagreement to agreement. Items are written in both directions, so agreement does not always push the result toward the same letter. There are three forward-keyed and two reverse-keyed items per pair. Reverse scoring aligns them, but does not remove all response-style effects: selecting Strongly agree for every item gives 60/40 toward E, S, T and J.
The statements are original editorial prompts. They are not copied official MBTI items, and the questionnaire has not been calibrated to reproduce an official result. Answer with an ordinary recent period in mind. If a situation is unfamiliar, the middle response avoids inventing a strong preference. This combines uncertainty and neutrality in one answer; it is a limitation of this short exercise.
How the balance is calculated
For each pair, responses are aligned toward the first named letter. A forward-keyed response keeps its value; a reverse-keyed response becomes 6 minus the response. The mean of the five aligned responses is converted to a 0–100 balance using 100 × (mean − 1) ÷ 4. The other letter receives the complementary balance.
For example, an aligned mean of 3.4 produces a 60/40 response balance. This says how the five answers balance under our scoring rule. It does not mean 60% confidence, a 60% chance that your type is correct, or a 60th-percentile position in the population. It also does not measure ability, maturity, or the amount of a trait you possess.
Ties and close results
An exact 50/50 pair has no favored letter and is identified as a tie. A stable result code uses the first letter as a display convention, not as a stronger preference. If one or more pairs tie, compare both descriptions before choosing a label.
A close result can change with a small number of responses. We do not provide a statistically established cutoff for how close is “uncertain,” because we have not performed the research needed to justify one. The result page suggests neighboring types when a pair is within ten percentage points of 50/50. This is an editorial reading rule, not a validated uncertainty threshold. A one-step answer change moves a pair by five points.
The 24-item reflection
The function reflection contains three original items for each of Ni, Ne, Si, Se, Ti, Te, Fi, and Fe. Each uses the same 1–5 response range. The mean for each function is normalized with 100 × (mean − 1) ÷ 4, giving eight separate 0–100 summaries rounded to the nearest whole number.
These scores do not need to sum to 100. They summarize endorsement of our prompts, not measured neural processes, population percentiles, or proven function strength. We do not infer a four-letter type or a function stack from their ranking. Three items cannot establish the broad psychological construct suggested by a familiar function name.
What has not been established
This questionnaire has no validation sample, norms, published reliability estimate, clinical assessment procedure, or professionally certified interpretation service. We have not demonstrated measurement equivalence across cultures, ages, or languages. Results are intended for personal reflection and reading choices. The official MBTI framework still has sixteen types; Step II explores twenty facets within that framework. Products advertising sixty-four types add their own dimensions and are not an official MBTI upgrade.
Use neither exercise for diagnosis, employment selection, access to opportunities, or decisions about another person's suitability as a partner. For the distinction between recognizable descriptions and measurement evidence, read Is MBTI accurate? The official instruments and 16Personalities use their own methods; their research does not validate ours.
Your responses and sharing
Responses are processed in your browser. Browser storage keeps item answers and progress on this device. A result link sends aggregate scores to the server when viewed, rather than item answers or your name. Anyone with the link can view those scores. An optional purchase stores a separate order record and uses the payment provider described at checkout.
The privacy page describes storage, clearing data, and the implications of sharing. The methodology and privacy description must reflect the actual hosting, order records, and provider configuration when the service changes.
